<p style="text-align: justify;">Familiarize yourself with the following terms; they usually form part of every foreign trade operation.</p>
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li><strong>Commercial documents.</strong> They include commercial invoice, pro forma invoice, certificate of origin (which is issued through the commerce chambers) and list of contents or packing list (description of goods).</li>
<li><strong>Customs documents</strong>. The ATA Carnet and the CPD Carnet (which allow to ship goods temporarily to 75 countries); Single Administrative Document (SAD), issued through the fiscal authority (Agencia Tributaria); Intrastat (periodic declarations).</li>
<li><strong>Transport documents</strong>. Like road or railway consignment note, sea waybill or air waybill.</li>
<li><strong>Certificates</strong>. They include insurances, health certificates, etc.</li>
<li><strong>Customs formalities.</strong> You need to formally get registered as an exporter (form 036) and keep VAT records.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>How to choose a partner?</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Choosing the right partner or supplier is a key factor of this process in which you are taking the first steps. Fairs and trade shows are great showcases to get in touch with possible partners but beware of those who want to close a deal right away. Before signing anything, <strong>get information about your prospect partner or supplier</strong>: size of the company, production, talk to other companies who might have worked together with them, find out if they are solvent (in the case of a partner) and if they deliver timely (in the case of a supplier). Once the decision has been taken, “it is essential to build a bond of trust between the two companies as well as to gather knowledge about the product or service offered and the market. In order to the partnership to make the company stronger, making it more competitive, it is key that the chosen partner has an extensive contact network and the ability to make it grow, as well as financial stability”, according to Jesús Sáinz, Chairman of PromoMadrid, the regional government-owned company incorporated with the purpose of promoting and developing the Region of Madrid internationally from an economic perspective.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>I need money for my operation</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">You will find specific lines of credit for the internationalization of SMEs in <strong>ICO, ICEX and COFIDES loans and in multilateral agencies.</strong> There are lines of credit for virtually any need: from packages to cover the costs of assisting to trade shows and market-research trips to favorable loans (low interest rate, repayment periods of 10 years without a grace period) or funding bigger investment projects (acquisition of goods, purchasing companies…). In these cases, the funding usually covers up to 80% of the necessary investments. Also, do not waste the funding opportunity of ICO-ICEX loans for companies in the ICEX’s PIPE program (Plan de Iniciación a la Promoción Exterior of the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade).</p>
